*not a rant, more a curious observation*
As a new player to 40k (relatively speaking - its been going for decades!), i find the idea of a space marine riding a wolf as very very confusing.
Who am i to ridicule the 'reality' of this fictional far out future you may say? Well fair enough, but...it just seems very weird given the rest of the armies and weapons. I could possibly see a pack of wolves as a cheap combat unit or upgrade, but wouldn't it go against a 200year old super soldiers best judgement to run into battle riding a wolf? We all know power armour is considered tough! so if you are firing one of the lesser guns of the universe...say a lasgun, which isnt awesome against power armour, maybe shooting the wolf might be a decent prospect.
I can understand boars for orks, because many orks have a jilted logic!
I can understand beasts for daemons, as they are magical creatures and have other powers or protection.
So...what's the deal with using wolves instead of a bike? or an APC?

Ork Boars are also often cybernetically 'enhanced' (Cyboars) except in the case of the more primitive Ork tribes. They are just mad.
Perhaps Fenrisian wolves are exceptionally 'ard?
Next week on animal planet...

The problem with that argument Mat...

.. is most armies do have cavalry.
However, it's a very sorry, ugly model!

lol..ok..(I will site my 'newness' here)
WTF are those horses? which armies are they from? - i stand by my point though - they look rediculous! (ok, so i know there are precidents for miss-matched tech - British army vs Zulu's, Mussolini's tanks at Abyssinia)
The kroot i can understand, they are pretty primitive anyway, and their back story is though alliance with the tau - it seems forgiveable.
I don't know anything about the dino eldar though - that one does seem wierd, but its not in their codex is it?
Yeah back on main topic - im not a fan of the model, but the others do look nice! im not sure Space Wolves are for me however.

I agree with Matt
the armies that do have animal mounts tend to be those with weaker armor (tau kroots), lower powered tech (guard) or a scew loose (orcs)
and I think we all agree it is a poor model - it looks like the wolf is doing dressage

and its head is two small.
If they had to mount the hero why not on a charriot type thing with husky style wolves?

GW like to to cover all aspects of warfare that has been prevalent through history (and still some modern). Cavalry has been such a huge part of warfare.
You could ask why 200 year old super humans carry swords and axes when they have guns at their disposal or why they run around with unprotected heads.
I'm just glad this horrendous model is a special character, so hopefully we won't see many.
